Establishment of Barcelona Campus of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine—Offering First Master’s Program of TCM in European Medical Schools
On January 27th, 2016, the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and government of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia, Spain, signed in Barcelona a framework agreement for co-establishing the European Development and Promotion Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Meanwhile, BUCM has set up a new campus in the city, offering the first TCM master’s program, which involves in the mainstream medical education in EU.
The European Development and Promotion Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine aims to be an internationally renowned TCM institution involved in TCM education, medical service, health preservation, research, trade, cultural exchange and consultancy. It is co-established in Barcelona by the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, government of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia and Barcelona city council. The center consists of the BUCM Barcelona Branch School and Research Center, Beijing Hospital of TCM Barcelona Branch, Cultural Exchange Center, etc. One of the milestones is the master’s program of TCM to be co-offered by BUCM and the Medical School, University of Barcelona starting from September 2016. The program is officially accredited by the European Union. The two universities began to explore in 2013 the possibility of cooperation in offering TCM master’s program in Spain to improve clinical skills and capacities of European TCM practitioners. This action means that conventional TCM higher education has been acknowledged by EU, so that later on TCM will possibly become part of the mainstream health care in EU, and medical practice of TCM doctors in EU can be legitimatized and the legal status of TCM can be established and protected.
In addition to the above-mentioned program, BUCM will engage in all-round cooperation with the Medical School, University of Barcelona in undergraduate, doctoral, and continuing education, and the two will make concerted efforts in scientific research, teacher and research fellow exchange, student exchange and training.
