The National Institute of TCM Constitution and Preventive Treatment of Diseases at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) was established in December 2017, with the Wang Qi Academy established in September 2021. The institute is directed by Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) master Wang Qi, with Wang Ji as executive deputy director and Li Yingshuai as deputy director.
At present, the institute has 31 full-time staff members, including eight with senior professional titles, four with associate senior professional titles, 26 holding doctoral degrees, nine with postdoctoral research experience, 13 master’s supervisors and eight doctoral supervisors. The institute boasts one Qihuang Scholar, three national-level young talents and five provincial- or ministerial-level talents, forming a high-caliber teaching and research team led by an academician and supported by core young and mid-career faculty members.
The institute conducts research in six directions: TCM constitution theory and classification, preventive treatment of diseases and health preservation, constitution-related diseases and chronic disease prevention, constitutional intervention and evaluation, TCM constitution and reproductive medicine, as well as the inheritance of TCM master scholars’ academic thoughts.
The institute hosts the Key Laboratory of TCM Constitution Identification of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the TCM master and nationally renowned veteran TCM expert inheritance studio, the Beijing Xinhuo Chuancheng 3+3 Project Studio, and several key disciplines. It also serves as the supporting unit for five national-level professional sub-committees, including the TCM Constitution Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine and the Specialty Committee of Constitutional Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.
Over the past five years, the institute has undertaken 68 projects at various levels, including 31 national-level projects, securing a total funding of 110 million RMB ($15.42 million). During the same period, it has published 53 SCI papers and 210 papers in core journals, won one Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, eight provincial, ministerial or association-level science and technology awards and secured 24 authorized patents.
The Wang Qi Academy is responsible for training high-level TCM talents and conducting the teaching of the integrated undergraduate-to-PhD education program “Future Strategic TCM Experts Project” (Wang Qi Class) at BUCM.
