Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), founded in 1956, is one of the earliest institutions of higher education in Chinese medicine approved by the State Council. It is directly administered by the Ministry of Education and jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Beijing Municipal Government.

Originally established as Beijing College of Chinese Medicine, the university was designated a national key institution in 1960 and was renamed Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 1993. During the following decades, it has been included in the national “211 Project,” the “985 Project Innovation Platform for Superior Disciplines,” and the national “Double First-Class” universities initiative. Its three disciplines — Chinese Medicine, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, and Chinese Materia Medica — have all been selected as “Double First-Class” disciplines.

BUCM has three campuses: Liangxiang, Hepingjie, and Wangjing. Guided by its motto “Diligent Learning, Extensive Seeking, Integrity, and Benevolence,” the university upholds the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education. It has developed into a comprehensive institution integrating education, research, healthcare, and cultural exchange, with Chinese medicine (CM) as its distinguishing strength.

The university has a faculty of over 6,300 staff members, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, national masters of CM, and many renowned experts and scholars. It has over 15,900 full-time students and more than 5,400 part-time students.

BUCM offers 16 undergraduate programs, including Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Acupuncture and Tuina, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmacy, Public Administration, English, Rehabilitation Therapy, Law, Business Administration, Pharmaceutical Administration, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Bioengineering, Clinical Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, and Traumatology and Orthopedics of CM. It also has a complete system for master’s and doctoral degree programs as well as postdoctoral research stations.

In Beijing, BUCM has four directly-affiliated hospitals — Dongzhimen Hospital, Dongfang Hospital, the Third Affiliated Hospital, and Fangshan Hospital — as well as the Guoyitang CM Clinic, providing strong support for clinical education, healthcare services, and research.

BUCM attaches great importance to scientific innovation and international collaboration. It hosts several national and provincial research platforms, undertakes major national projects, and plays a leading role in advancing the inheritance and innovation of CM. As one of the first CM universities in China to enroll international students, BUCM has trained large numbers of professionals from over 90 countries and regions. It has established partnerships with many renowned universities and research institutions worldwide, and has founded overseas CM centers and joint education programs, serving as an important bridge for the global development of CM.
