The School of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is the university’s oldest and largest academic unit, integrating education, research and clinical service. Its predecessor, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Beijing College of Chinese Medicine, was founded in 1956. In the past 67 years, the school has become a major center for CM education and innovation, with many renowned CM masters and leading scholars having taught and worked here, contributing significantly to the development of traditional Chinese medicine in modern China.
The school currently comprises 17 teaching and research departments, seven research centers, two experimental centers and 15 university-level research institutes. It has a faculty of 192 full-time teachers, including professors, associate professors, academicians, Qi-Huang scholars and national CM masters, forming a well-structured team of distinguished experts and outstanding young scholars. The school hosts multiple national and Beijing-level teaching teams, CM inheritance studios and innovation projects, and serves as a major base for the preservation and advancement of traditional medicine knowledge.
The school leads the national first-class undergraduate program in CM and offers master and doctoral degree programs in both CM and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, with postdoctoral research stations in these two disciplines. Both disciplines were rated A+ in China’s national discipline evaluations and were selected for the Double First-Class Initiative (World-Class Universities and Disciplines) in 2017. Currently, the school supervises hundreds of doctoral and master students, training high-level CM professionals and researchers.
As one of the first institutions in China to establish doctoral programs and postdoctoral research stations in CM, the school now hosts 12 key disciplines of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including nine high-level key disciplines, and a range of national and municipal research platforms, such as two National International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases, two Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education and two Beijing Key Laboratories. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), the school’s faculty members have led 39 major national research projects, winning two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 59 provincial or ministerial (including society-level) awards.
