The School of Management at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) traces its roots back to 1983, when the Ministry of Health established the Medical and Health Management Cadre Training Center. As one of the first seven centers in China dedicated to health management training and the only one affiliated with a CM university, it laid the foundation for the field of CM management. In 2000, it was formally established as the School of Management.
Over the years, the school has steadily expanded its academic offerings and research capacity, becoming the first institution in China to award doctoral degrees in CM Management and later broadening its programs to include Information Management and Information Systems, Pharmacy Administration, Big Data Management and Applications, and Public Service Management, the last of which has been recognized as a first-class undergraduate program at both municipal and national levels.
Today, the school has 62 faculty and staff members, including 51 full-time instructors, and is organized into six teaching and research divisions. It enrolls 578 undergraduate students across four majors, 171 master's students in two programs and 12 doctoral candidates. Since 2020, it has also offered postdoctoral research opportunities in CM Management under the discipline of Chinese Medicine. The school is home to the industry's first Comprehensive Health Management Practical Training Platform, which integrates software and hardware into immersive, scenario-based learning. Its Hospital Accounting and Financial Management course was recognized in 2019 as a high-quality undergraduate course by the Beijing Municipal Government.
CM Management at the school is recognized as both a national and municipal key discipline. Its faculty members have undertaken hundreds of research projects commissioned by national and provincial bodies, securing more than 28 million yuan (approximately $ 3.9 million) in funding. They have published over 30 SCI/SSCI-indexed papers and more than 100 high-level Chinese-language journal articles, and their research has been honored with awards such as the second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Ministry of Education Natural Science Achievement Award.
The School of Management has long played the role of an industry think tank, contributing to the development of CM-related plans, setting industry standards and serving major national needs. Many policy recommendations and research reports have been adopted by ministries and provincial governments. The school also fosters academic exchange and community building, playing a leading role in shaping health and CM policy, advancing theories of health management and promoting positive health concepts.
