School of Marxism

The School of Marxism was established in 2015, evolving from the former Department of Social Sciences at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM). It is responsible for the unified management of ideological and political theory courses, development of Marxist theory as a discipline and talent cultivation in Marxist studies.

In 2018, the school was authorized to confer master’s degrees in Marxist theory, and in 2020, it was designated as one of the second batch of Beijing Key Schools of Marxism. It also serves as a collaborating unit of the Collaborative Innovation Center for Research on the Theory of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in Beijing Universities and was selected by the Education Commission of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China as one of the first Demonstration Sites for the Reform of Ideological and Political Theory Education and Teaching in Beijing Universities.

The school hosts several research platforms, including the Research Center for the Adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese Context, the Research Center for Ideological and Political Education, the Research Center for Marxism and Traditional Chinese Culture, the Research Center for Party Building and the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Research Center for Medical Ethics in the New Era.

Under the first-level discipline of Marxist theory, four second-level disciplines have been established. The school has built strengths in areas such as Marxist classics and basic principles, Xi  Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Marxism and traditional Chinese culture, as well as core socialist values and the spirit of medical professionalism, reflecting the distinctive features of BUCM as a specialized medical university.

The school has 47 faculty members, including one selected for the Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents Support Program and several scholars recognized at the municipal level, such as a Shanghai Dawn Scholar, members of Beijing’s Hundred Talents Program for New Century Young and Middle-Aged Theoretical Scholars in Social Sciences and Special-Class Teachers for Ideological and Political Theory Courses in Beijing Universities.

In recent years, the school has undertaken more than 40 new research projects, including those funded by the Ministry of Education, the National Social Science Fund of China and Beijing Social Science Fund, among others.

Faculty members have published over 20 monographs and edited volumes, and contributed more than 200 papers to newspapers and journals, including People’s Daily, Guangming Daily, Red Flag Manuscript, Leading Journal of Ideological & Theoretical Education and Social Science Front.

Under the leadership of the CPC BUCM committee, the School of Marxism has made remarkable progress in all aspects of its work. Its faculty structure has become more balanced, its quality of teaching and overall educational standards have steadily improved, and both disciplinary development and scientific research have advanced markedly.

The school is increasingly emerging as a base for Marxist theory teaching and research, as well as a center for cultivating the ideological, political and humanistic qualities of CM professionals and interdisciplinary talents dedicated to the health and well-being of humanity.
