The major project of the National Social Science Fund, Research on How Chinese Medicine (CM) Culture Promotes the Revival of Traditional Chinese Culture, undertaken by Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM), has successfully passed the final evaluation by the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences and was rated “Excellent.”
The successful completion of this project marks a significant breakthrough in CM cultural research in promoting the revival of traditional Chinese culture, providing key academic support for strengthening cultural confidence in the new era.
The project focuses on three aspects of CM culture: spiritual culture (core values), behavioral culture (healthy lifestyle), and material culture (CM brand symbols), as well as two dimensions: “passing down” and “spreading outward.” It explores in depth the ways in which CM culture can contribute to the revival of China’s traditional cultural heritage.
Since its launch in 2016, the project team has produced 188 research outputs, including 154 academic papers, 11 monographs, 9 research reports, and 14 theoretical articles published in leading newspapers such as People’s Daily and Guangming Daily. The final report and stage research outputs amount to nearly three million Chinese characters. The project proposed and substantiated several innovative ideas, including that “CM culture is a forerunner of the great revival of Chinese civilization” and that “benevolence, harmony, excellence and sincerity are the core values of CM culture,” which have already had significant social impact. This is the first academic project to systematically explore the revival of Chinese traditional culture from the perspective of CM culture. The research emphasizes both preserving the essence of Chinese civilization and innovating its applications, strengthening cultural confidence through the integration of theory and practice, and setting a model for philosophy and social science research while expanding the scope and vision of current Sinology studies.
During the project, Chief Expert Professor Zhang Qicheng achieved multiple notable accomplishments. His major works include Cultural Priority, CM Culture and the Revival of Chinese Classics, Philosophy of Life in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Complete Interpretation of Huangdi Neijing, and The Way of Yin and Yang: Detailed Exposition of the Yi Zhuan. Professor Zhang has delivered over 100 lectures online and offline, making outstanding contributions to the promotion of CM culture. He has served as an expert in CM cultural construction and popularization for the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and was honored as an “Outstanding Individual in National CM Cultural Construction”. Professor Zhang’s exceptional achievements have also been widely recognized in academia and beyond: he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Sinology – the Tang Yongtong Sinology Award, the Sun Yat-sen Spirit Award for Culture and Arts from Kwong Wah Yit Poh, the world’s oldest Chinese-language newspaper in Malaysia, the Education Contribution Award from Peking University, and was ranked among the top 1% of highly cited scholars in China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) in 2024.
