Dongzhimen Hospital






Established in 1958, the Dongzhimen Hospital, affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, is among the first to be recognized as the model top-grade class-A TCM hospital in China. It is the exclusive “Training Centre of TCM Application Techniques” in China which is acknowledged by the “WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Cities and Urban Policy Research”. Consisting of 2 branches, Dongzhimen Hospital is in cooperation with 118 hospitals all over China.


The hospital employs 1,722 medical and supporting staff members, among whom 238 are professors, associate professors, chief physicians, and associate chief physicians, 65 are supervisors of doctoral candidates, and 131 are supervisors of master’s degree candidates. The hospital houses 47 major clinical departments and 13 medical laboratories, comprised of 122 outpatient departments specializing in the treatment of specific diseases. The key departments include those of nephrology, neurology, cardiology, pneumology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, gynecology, acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina, endocrine, and peripheral vascular diseases. According to statistics, it averagely served 7,317 outpatients daily in 2014 with a maximum of 13,592, and in total about 1.834 million yearly, and it has also cared 16,672 inpatients. The hospital has 916 beds. The TCM-Klinik Bad Kötzting, an exclusive TCM hospital established in Germany by BUCM and the Dongzhimen Hospital in collaboration with a German enterprise, has 83 beds, which has received more than 25,000 patients from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc. As the only hospital providing TCM treatment in Western countries, patients’ medical expenses are covered by an insurance company.


As the First School of Clinical Medicine of BUCM, the Dongzhimen Hospital offers clinical courses and clinical training to undergraduates and postgraduates. Since 1958, it has provided clinical training for tens of thousands of senior TCM professionals, about 900 overseas students from 79 countries and regions, and a thousand Chinese visiting scholars. Now it has 19 clinical teaching sections, and it is authorized to confer doctoral and master’s degree.


In the recent 5 years, the Dongzhimen Hospital has undertaken 212 key research projects sponsored by the National 973 Program, 863 Program, National Scientific and Technological Research Project, National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Beijing municipal government. Research funds reach about 100 million yuan. It has obtained 3 national patents, and won 36 awards for scientific and technological achievements.
